But what can cause an ulcer and how can you prevent them?
As well as a buildup of smaller amounts of pressure building over time, other things can cause an ulcer too. Some of them can result in an ulcer developing straight away, while other causes (such as repeated pressure) mean that an ulcer can develop more slowly. It’s important to consider everything you put your feet on or in, from footwear and what else might be in there, hot or cold surfaces, sharp objects, or water temperatures. Do your shoes fit well? Could there be an object in there? Do you avoid walking barefoot, and is the bath water not too hot or cold? And if you have hard skin your feet will be less able to stand any stresses and are much more likely for the skin to break and ulcerate.
So what does that mean for me?
